Blood parasites are organisms that live in the blood of their animal hosts. These parasites can range from single-celled protozoa to more complex bacteria and rickettsiae. The method of transmission varies, depending on the parasite, but often they are transmitted through the bites of ticks or flies.
One of the most common diseases in intact bitches is pyometra— a potentially life-threatening disease associated with a variety of clinical and laboratory findings. A retrospective study was performed using records from bitches diagnosed with pyometra during the years — at the University Animal Hospital, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden. Of the bitches, were surgically treated by ovariohysterectomy, 9 were medically treated and 32 were euthanized without treatment.

In closed cervix pyometra, pus and bacterial products accumulate in the uterus, which is thought to induce a more severe illness.
Pyometra is an infection of the uterus, the reproductive organ of a female dog. The uterus becomes filled with pus and the infection can spread systemically leading to sepsis. Pyometra occurs commonly in older intact female dogs and will begin several weeks after a heat cycle.
In contrast, adult-onset vaginitis affects some spayed female dogs. Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. Juvenile vaginitis occurs only in puppies.
Sexual-cycle abnormalities are an important cause of infertility in bitches, with disorders such as anestrus, split estrus, and persistent estrus having varied etiologies. Sexual-cycle abnormalities in bitches may be addressed as follicular- or luteal-phase disorders. However, pet owners should have a good working knowledge of the sexual cycles of their animals in order to better understand these disorders.
