Premarital sex is sexual activity practiced by people before they are married. Historically, premarital sex was considered a moral issue which was taboo in many cultures and considered a sin by a number of religions, but since about the sit has become more widely accepted, especially in Western countries. Until the s,  "premarital sex" referred to sexual relations between two people prior to marrying each other.

Adolescent childbearing, however common in the United States today, is not a single phenomenon but the end product of a series of behaviors, undertaken in a societal context in which postponement of parenthood until after school completion and marriage is seen as normative. Each behavior—sexual onset, contraception, conception, and childbearing— requires a decision conscious or unconscious that, in different cultural groups, is differently constrained by custom or sanctions.

Family is an important environment that is associated with a range of social and emotional behaviors of children. Twenty-six single males and females of years who were living in Isfahan participated in this qualitative research study. The participants had begun to have some form of sexual activities. This study was a qualitative investigation into sexual attitudes and behaviours, and contraceptive use among Malaysian youth, based on constructs from the health belief model, theory of reasoned action, and problem behaviour theory. The participants were secondary school students and university undergraduates from Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The study found a lack of knowledge about sexual issues and contraception among the participants.
